Understanding the Causes of Women’s Hair Loss

First, it’s important to know how healthy hair growth happens. Hair grows from the follicles on your scalp, and each follicle alternates between rest and growth phases. During its growth phase, new hair is produced; when it enters the rest phase, the follicle temporarily stops producing that growth, and old hairs are shed to make room for new ones.

At any given moment, it’s natural to have up to 10 percent of your follicles in the rest phase. It’s also normal to have a little shedding each day—up to 100 hairs, in fact! The problems start when that growth/rest cycle is disrupted. This happens when the growth phase is made less productive, or when the rest phase is prolonged.

Indeed, there are a number of potential causes of female hair loss—and all of them fit into one of those two basic categories.

What Causes Hair Loss in Women?

As for some of those specific causes of female hair loss, here are some of the most common ones.

Androgenetic alopecia. Also known as female pattern hair loss, this condition isn’t quite as prevalent as its male equivalent—yet it’s still fairly commonplace. In fact, it’s the single biggest cause of women’s hair loss. The condition is generally believed to have a genetic component and has much to do with an excess of male hormones that inhibit healthy hair growth.

Other forms of alopecia. Various autoimmune disorders—including alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis—can lead to hair loss all over the scalp and the body. These conditions are fairly rare, but they do happen.

Medical hair loss. Women can also lose hair due to complications from chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and prescription medications. Even something as simple as a vitamin deficiency can lead to hair loss.

Trichotillomania. This nervous condition—closely related to OCD—results in women chewing, pulling, and twisting their hair. This can cause scarring on the follicles, making the hair loss permanent.

There are a number of other potential causes of female hair loss, but these are some of the primary ones. Fortunately, all of them can be addressed, and your natural, healthy hairline restored. The first step? Visit AMS Designs, Inc. to have a scalp evaluation.
