Some men are surprised when their hair starts falling out; others expect it, perhaps because they watched their father or grandfather go bald. Whether it’s out of the blue or completely anticipated, however, male hair loss can be tough to deal with. The good news is that there are plenty of safe and effective solutions that can restore your natural, full hairline—and the first step is meeting with a stylist at AMS Designs, Inc. to learn more about the possible treatments.

But let’s back up for a moment: What actually causes hair loss in men? There are a number of potential causes of male hair loss, and on this page, we’ll highlight some of the most common ones.

Understanding the Causes of Male Hair Loss

Before we get into what causes hair loss in men, let’s look at what the natural, healthy hair loss process entails.

Hair grows from follicles on your head, and each follicle goes through a natural cycle of growth and rest. During the growth stage, new hairs are produced—anywhere from one to four hairs from a single follicle. During the rest stage, growth stops, and old hairs are shed to make room for new hairs. At any given moment, up to 10 percent of your follicles may be in the rest phase, and that’s perfectly normal. What’s more, a little light shedding here and there is not a big deal; in fact, it’s part of the process.

Problems come when that cycle is disrupted. This can happen in one of two basic ways—either the growth stage is made less productive, or the rest stage is prolonged. All of the following causes of male hair loss fall into one of those two buckets.

What Causes Hair Loss in Men?

As for some of the specific conditions that cause hair loss in men, male pattern hair loss—also known as androgenetic alopecia—is the most common by far. In fact, this is the underlying factor in nine out of the 10 men we see. This is generally assumed to be a genetic condition, one in which testosterone is converted into DHT, a hormone that disrupts that natural hair growth cycle.

While this is the most common cause of hair loss in men, there are a few additional conditions to know about. These potential causes of male hair loss include:

  • Medical causes. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments can often lead to hair loss in cancer patients. Also, many prescription drugs have been linked to hair loss. Even something as mundane as a vitamin deficiency can throw off your hair growth cycle.
  • Different forms of alopecia. Autoimmune disorders, including alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis, can lead to hair loss not just on the scalp, but all over the face and body.
  • Trichotillomania. This nervous condition, related to OCD, is characterized by the pulling, twisting, and chewing of hair. This leads to scarring on the follicles, which can make the hair loss permanent.
