Hair Systems vs. Trichology: Understanding the Solutions

There’s more than one way to deal with hair loss, and to restore your own hairline to fullness and health. Generally, though, the solutions for hair replacement fall into two basic categories—hair systems and trichology.

These are both viable options, proven to be safe and effective. Indeed, both have great track records for producing full, natural-looking heads of hair. What’s more, both of these options provide results without requiring any sort of surgical intervention (as opposed to something like a hair transplan).

As you seek solutions for your own hair loss needs, both trichology and hair systems are worth considering. In this post, we’ll provide some simple definitions for each category.

Hair Systems

We’ll start by discussing hair systems. This is generally considered to be the ultimate solution for those faced with major hair loss; the results it offers are completely natural-looking and also permanent, though again, there is no requirement for a transplant or any other type of invasive surgery.

Here’s how it works: You’ll first have your scalp measured, and you’ll be fitted for a super-thin membrane. This membrane is attached to your scalp, where it fits snugly and comfortably. Then, real human hairs are inserted, one by one, into the membrane. This process is handled by our technicians. Note that this is top-of-the-line human hair, never bleached or dyed.

Once all of those hairs are inserted, we can cut, color, and style it however you like—either allowing you to replicate your previous look or to try something totally new!

Hair systems are durable no matter your lifestyle—meaning this option is safe and secure even if you are athletic or love to swim. It looks completely natural; the membrane itself will not be visible to anyone else. And maintenance is fairly minimal: You’ll need to visit your stylist every few weeks, just like you would for a normal haircut.

A final note: There are a number of world-class hair systems, and meeting with an AMS stylist can help you clarify which one is best for you.

Trichology

Now let’s talk about the benefits of trichology. This is another non-surgical hair replacement solution for both men and women. If you aren't familiar with the term, trichology simply refers to the area of dermatology that is concerned with the scalp and with hair follicles.

The health of your scalp is a major factor in hair loss—and if you have any abnormality, such as a decline in blood flow to your follicles, it can lead to thinning hair. By addressing scalp conditions and making your head a safe, healthy place to grow hair again, we can sometimes prevent hair loss, or even reverse its effects.

At AMS, we are trained in trichology, and able to accurately assess the overall health of your scalp and follicles. From there, we can recommend some clinically-backed trichological treatments, including lotions, creams, and shampoos. In some cases, laser therapy can also be beneficial.

Trichology can be a great option both for those who are in the early stages of hair loss or even for those who wish to take preventative measures, perhaps knowing that they have a genetic predisposition to thinning hair.

Understanding the Treatment Options

At AMS, we’re always happy to sit down with you in a private, comfortable setting, and to talk candidly about the hair loss methods that we think are best for you. These consultations are provided free of charge.
